On The Road Again

6 Nov

Kansas City, MissouriI know, I know. You can say it…or Tweet it, or Yammer about it, or Chirp it (yay!). I have broken the most fundamental law of blogging and “web 2.0”. I have let too much time pass between blog entries and now I must try to rebuild your trust in me and again earn your attention. Oh, the pressure…the guilt! Colleagues and fellow tribes people, I humbly ask your forgiveness…and, if you are continuing to read, thank you for your support!

One of the many things I’ve learned over the past year experimenting with these wonderful social media tools is that blogging is something I really LOVE to do, but that it is somewhat time consuming (if I want to write something of value anyway) and therefore gets pushed aside (sadly) when the wants must make way for the needs. We certainly had a lot of needs present themselves this summer at COMPACFLT as you may have seen from the rotating focus of effort on my Intellipedia user page (or assumed from the lack of activity on this blog!).

By now, you know that Admiral Willard has become Commander of U.S. Pacific Command. In true Admiral Willard style, before he left PACFLT, he directed that the staff conduct a “C2 of C2” tabletop event. We had many observers and several key players in the game, and aside from driving the staff to work to its highest potential, I would tell you that it opened the eyes and minds of our operators who in some cases did not know what they did not know. I will write more about C2 of C2 at a later time (perhaps on The “Secret” Adventures of a KMO on SIPR), but know that the lessons learned there have significantly influenced the way I approach my work as a KMO and have shaped the priorities of our KM tribe in the Pacific Fleet. I will always be grateful to Admiral Willard for his support, his guidance, and his leadership. He is a true advocate of knowledge management and I am grateful for his ability to see the relationship between KM and command and control, and for his direction to advance our community by tying our objectives to C2.

Now, I started this blog entry on my laptop as I was leaving the Army Operational Knowledge Management Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. I am picking up where I left from seat 13F on a flight from Washington DC where I attended the Joint Staff’s FIRST KM Conference, to San Antonio, Texas where I will be a panelist at an AFCEA Technology Symposium on Knowledge Management. A day and a half from now, I will be on my way to San Diego where, along with LCDR Marc Aragon (C3F KMO) and Robin Hood (NCTAMS PAC KM), I will hop aboard the USS Stennis to see how KMO LCDR Mike Lebu does business afloat. My friends and family have teased me endlessly on Facebook that I’m never home, and, well, they’re right. BUT I make these trips to keep the ideas flowing, the network growing and the tribe educated on what’s happening in our community in the DoD.

In keeping with the President’s commitment to transparency in government, and my own commitment to let the tribe know what I’m up to, I have happily Tweeted (and simultaneously Yammered) along the way during my travels and you can find conference materials, web sites and summaries when available by visiting my Travel Schedule on my Intelink user page. I will try to post some key take aways from these events in the next few days, but in the meantime, I think I’ll let you take a look at what’s new with CPF N01KM and I’ll blog a bit later. Thank you again for your support, and as always, please let us know what you’re up to and what we can do to make our blogs and web pages more valuable to you.

Aloha, V/R, and Yee Haw from San Antonio,
Jamie
